Our history

The Vision Begin
1980

In the 1980s, Jacques Swaters, a successful businessman in his 60s, purchased land in small parcels in the beautiful Andalusian countryside. His dream was to create a space where his large, extended family could come together and enjoy the tranquility of nature. Over the years, Jacques transformed old houses, reformed them, and began renting them out annually, turning his dream into a reality.

Agricultural Innovation
1990

Eric, Jacques’ son-in-law, who had experience working on agricultural farms in southern France, arrived with a game-changing idea. He suggested planting avocado trees to help reduce living costs and make the property self-sustaining. This move was the start of Finca Maria de la Luz’s agricultural identity and its commitment to sustainability.

A Family Legacy
2010

After Jacques’ passing in 2010 and many happy and prosperous years for Finca Maria de la Luz, his daughter Florence and her family moved from Belgium to Spain to continue his dream. Florence, along with her two children Felix and Prune, embraced the family legacy, and Florence envisioned opening the gates of Finca Maria de la Luz to the world, allowing others to experience the beauty of the estate.

The Expansion of Rentals
2013

In 2013, La Ciruela Villa was made available for rent. This marked the beginning of the finca’s expansion into a guest-focused retreat, offering more space for families and groups looking to enjoy the serene Andalusian countryside.

CasaBlu as a Private Villa
2019

In 2019, CasaBlu, originally envisioned as a hotel, began welcoming guests as a private rental. Offering a unique blend of comfort and rustic charm, it became a popular retreat for those seeking a more intimate and luxurious experience on the finca.

A New Era of Finca Maria de la Luz
2021

The transformation of the property continued in 2021 with the completion of La Finquita Villa, which had been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This modern, fully-equipped villa now offers the perfect blend of comfort and luxury, completing the range of accommodations at Finca Maria de la Luz.

CasaBlu Becomes a Boutique Hotel
2024

After overcoming administrative delays, the dream of transforming CasaBlu into a boutique hotel finally came to life in 2024. The hotel now invites guests to experience a refined stay with exceptional service, blending modern luxury with the charm and tranquility of the finca.

Opening the Gates to the World
2024

Finca Maria de la Luz is now a place where both families and guests from all over the world can experience the beauty, peace, and tradition that started with Jacques’ dream. Florence’s vision of opening the estate to the public has come true, and the finca continues to evolve, blending its agricultural roots, family legacy, and warm hospitality.

A Glimpse Into the Future
2025

Looking ahead, we are excited to expand Finca Maria de la Luz with two new offerings: a unique glamping experience for nature lovers and a restaurant that will feature fresh, locally sourced ingredients. While these projects are currently delayed, we are committed to bringing them to life in the near future, offering guests even more ways to enjoy the finca’s beauty.
